Nine Shaktis

https://harekrishnainfo.blogspot.com/search/label/Uddhava

Lord Krishna had taken birth and Vasudev had exchanged Krishna with Yogmaya (Durga) in the form of a baby girl.

Kamsa came furiously to kill the baby girl but the girl escaped from his hand and appeared in her form as Yogmaya Devi.

She declared loudly, “Kamsa! The Lord has appeared on the Earth to give pleasure to all the living entities and to kill you.

Along with him, eight Maha-Shakti-greater and more attractive than me-will also take birth on the earth. Their names are

  1. Radha,
  2. Chandravali,
  3. Lalita,
  4. Visakha,
  5. Padma,
  6. Saibya,
  7. Syamala and
  8. Bhadra.

Whoever marries them will be most fortunate: he will be Rajendra(Emperor), and will be so powerful that he will defeat even Mahadeva in battle.”

Gopi Manjari Sakhi

A breakdown of the three terms illustrates their specific meanings and roles:
1. Gopi (Milkmaid / Devotee)
  • Meaning: Originating from the Sanskrit word gopy, a Gopi is a cowherd girl from the village of Vrindavan.
  • Significance: In Vaishnava philosophy, the Gopis are the highest embodiments of unalloyed, unconditional devotion (bhakti). Their deep, unselfish love for Krishna is considered the pinnacle of spiritual perfection.
2. Sakhi (Lady Friend)
  • Meaning: A Sakhi is a female friend, companion, or confidante.
  • Significance: In the spiritual realm, the Sakhis are the principal associates of Radharani. The most prominent among them (like Lalita and Visakha) are known as the Ashta Sakhis (Eight Friends). They are usually the exact same age as Radha and actively participate alongside her in romantic pastimes with Krishna.
3. Manjari (Bud / Youthful Attendant)
  • Meaning: A Manjari translates to an unfolding blossom or flower bud, symbolizing youthfulness, purity, and fresh devotion.
  • Significance: In Gaudiya Vaishnavism, the Manjaris are a highly revered, younger group of maidservants (usually aged 10 to 14) who serve the Sakhis. They possess a highly specific mood of devotion: they have no desire for direct romantic union with Krishna. Instead, their sole joy lies in assisting and enhancing the loving affairs between Radha and Krishna. Because of their pure devotion, they are granted access to the most confidential pastimes (nikunjas).
How They Connect
The phrase Gopi, Manjari, Sakhi represents a progression of divine service. The Gopis are the general community of devoted cowherd girls. The Sakhis are Radha's intimate peers and closest friends, and the Manjaris are the devoted younger maidservants to those Sakhis.
In advanced spiritual practices (Manjari Bhava), a devotee meditates on themselves having the form of a Manjari, dedicating their eternal life to selflessly serving Srimati Radharani.
